Biographies
KATHLEEN MCLEAN is currently Associate Principal Bassoon of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. She is on faculty at the University of Toronto and at the Royal Conservatory of Music. A graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music in 1985, she studied with Dr. Sol Schoenbach. Kathleen was Principal Bassoon of the Canadian Opera Company and a member of the Victoria Symphony. She has participated in many festivals, including the Vancouver Chamber Music Festival, Scotia Festival, Evian International Festival, and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. In 2001, she participated in the world-renowned World Orchestra for Peace at Royal Albert Hall, London. One of the co-founders of the interesting Caliban Quartet of Bassoons, Kathleen has made two recordings with the group. She is also a member of the Canadian Winds, the Toronto Wind Quintet and the ChamberWorks ensemble. She has performed with such groups as New Music Concerts, Music Toronto, and the Amici ensemble.
KEITH ATKINSON has been Associate Principal Oboe of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra since 1985. In addition to his symphonic duties, Mr. Atkinson is an active recitalist and chamber musician. He is a founding member of the Meridian Trio which, recently released its first CD featuring music for flute, oboe and piano. He appears regularly on the Evening Overtures chamber series of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and plays with the Bach Consort, which has released two CDs of Bach arias and cantatas. He also performs with New Music Concerts in Toronto, the Mississauga Choral Society, and Music at Metropolitan United, Toronto. In demand as a teacher, he is on the faculties of the University of Toronto and the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Mr. Atkinson earned a Bachelor of Music degree from Indiana University, studying with Jerry Sirucek, and a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, where he was a student of Ray Stiil. Whiie in graduate school, he was Principal Oboe of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and played extra with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Upon graduation in 1981, he joined the San Francisco Symphony as Second Oboe.
JOSEPH ORLOWSKI has been a member of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra as second clarinet since 1988. Joseph has acted as Principal clarinettist with the Canadian Opera Company on several operas between seasons from 2000-2003. During the years 1988 and 2000, Joseph was the Associate Principal Clarinettist with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. His previous positions include the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and the National Ballet Orchestra.
Joseph is active in chamber music throughout Ontario. His performances include the Festival of the Sound,the Ottawa Chamber Festival, theMcgill University Chamber Series and solo recitals in northern Ontario.
He teaches at the University of Toronto and the Royal Conservatory of Music. Joseph is also a Certified Personal Trainer, focusing on injury prevention and strengthening for professional musicians.
Pianist MIDORI KOGA joined the piano and piano pedagogy faculty at theUniversity of Toronto as Associate Professor in fall of 2004. Previously, she held the position of Associate Professor of Piano, and Director of Piano Pedagogy at Michigan State University. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from the University of British Columbia, Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Michigan, and a performance diploma from the Mozarteum Hochschule fiir Musik in Salzburg, Austria.
Koga has been featured as soloist, chamber musician and accompanist in music festivals throughout the world, including the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, Mozarteum Sommerakademie Festspiel in Salzburg Austria , the Al Fresno New Music Festival, the Johannesen International Festival of the Arts in Britisn Columbia , the World Saxophone Congress in Valencia Spain, the International Computer Music Festival. Koga is a prize-winner in national competitions including the Concours de Musique du Canada , and the National Graduate Artist Competition at St. Mary’s College-Notre Dame.
An advocate of 20th century music, she commissions, performs and records with the new music ensemble QUORUM whose first CD Cold Water, Dry Stone... The Music of Evan Chambers was released by Albany in January of 2001. The ensemble has performed throughout the US including a highly acclaimed debut in New York 's Merkin Hall, and has held residencies at the Interlochen Center for the Arts, the John Donald Robb Composers’ Symposium in New Mexico , the Akron New Music Festival, and with the Cleveland Composers Forum. She has also recorded for the Equilibrium label as a member of the Michigan Chamber Players; the CD was re-released by Albany in Fall 1999.
Active also as a lecturer, she has presented at the World Pedagogy Conference, the Music Teachers’ National Association National Conference, and the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. She has been published numerous times in the American Music Teacher; the article Music Making and Wellness Project: The Positive Effects of Music-Making on the Health and Well-being of Seniors was recipient of the 2001 National Article of the Year Award presented by the MTNA.
